11 Cornhole Board Decals (Tips and Ideas) [2021]

Some people love the plain and classic look of wooden cornhole boards and there’s definitely something to be said about a well-stained and coated plain wooden cornhole board. But many like to give their cornhole boards a bit of personality by adding one some cornhole board decals. Here’s everything you need to know about these decals and some ideas for your own decals.

Cornhole skins vs decals

Make sure you’re aware of the difference between cornhole skins and cornhole decals.

Cornhole skins will cover the entire cornhole board and you’ll usually have to cut out the circle for the cornhole. Meanwhile decals are essentially just stickers that you put on to the board.

How to apply cornhole decals

Please do not rush and thrown on your cornhole decals!

Before applying decals you need to know the basics for applying decals.

There are a few different methods for applying cornhole decals. I usually prefer the “dry method” where you place the decal on the cornhole board without applying any kind of water/soap solution.

Simply tape the decal down on one side, crease it over, and then slowly peel back the decal while using a squeegee or credit card to gently pat down then decal. Then go at it a little harder to work out the air bubbles, apply some poly and you’re all done!

Sound a little confusing?

Well, don’t worry I’ve got a much more detailed guide with instructional videos which will show you how to apply the decals — you can find that article here.

Tips for making the decals look better

I have five tips for making your decals look better on your cornhole board.

Tip #1: Take the time to measure

It’s easy to get excited about applying your favorite decals to your cornhole board right when you get your hands on it but you don’t want to rush into it.

Like the instructions above emphasize, you need to take your time to make sure the logo is centered and/or in the exact position it needs to be.

Tip #2: Add trim around the cornhole

Some decals made specifically for cornhole boards come with matching circular decals that you can put around the cornhole (or you could always just paint it a matching color).

This adds a nice contrast that looks better in my opinion but it also can help call attention to the cornhole and give you something to focus on when tossing your bean bags.

Tip #3: Paint the frame/edges of the board

Something else you can do to improve the look of your cornhole decals is to paint the frame and edges of your cornhole board. I really like boards with this look because you not only get to appreciate the grain of the wood but the board has bit more personality with the matching colors.

Tip #4: Get a decent sized logo

I would go for a decal around 16 or 18 inches.

Obviously, this is up to your preference but many people don’t realize just how small those 6 inch decals look when they are on a full-size cornhole board that’s 4 feet by 2 feet.

Tip #5: Consider decal duos

Remember that you’re going to probably want decals for two cornhole boards.

Think about getting creative and finding decals that compliment each other very well. This a great idea for couples but also can work in many different ways, depending on your interest.

Matching bags

If you can find a decal for a sports team, college, or other major brand, then you can probably also find matching bags for that decal.

Getting branded bean bags is a great idea not only because the bags nicely compliment the board but because it makes it easier to identify your bags from others. If you’re bringing out your boards and bags to many events, that will reduce the odds of your equipment getting lost is mistakenly taken.

1. College decals for cornhole boards

There are some places perfectly designed to show off your college pride: automobile windows, license plate covers, coffee mugs, door mats, the list can go on for quite a while.

But there’s something special about a cornhole board where a college decal just makes extra sense. And for that reason college decals are my favorite ideas to cornhole boards.

Tailgating is huge at many colleges and cornhole is arguably the best tailgating game. So it just makes sense that you’d want to stamp on your university’s logo on your cornhole board.

Here are some of the most popular cornhole decals for colleges:

2. Ohio State cornhole decals

Ohio is an important place in the cornhole history books and could probably be credited with the resurgence of cornhole as a game.

Cornhole is insanely popular in Ohio and so it comes as no surprise that Ohio State cornhole decals are some of the most sought-after decals on the market.

3. Michigan cornhole decals

Michigan is another hot spot for cornhole (although many people might refer to it as bags). So it only makes sense that many people out there might be looking for Michigan cornhole decals or Michigan State (gotta show them some love, too).

While Michigan definitely has the more classic logo, I’m a big fan of the dark green Michigan State trojan helmet logo that would look really good on a brighter wooden surface.

4. Notre Dame cornhole decals

Notre Dame is one of the media darlings of college football (whether rightly or wrongly) but they have a thriving cornhole playing population at tailgate.

You can get different types of Notre Dame decals, though I like the Fightin’ Irish decals.

Notre Dame is known for its simple uniform designs in football so I think in the case of the Irish, it could make sense to go with one of the cornhole skins that just have the Notre Dame navy and gold colors.

5. South Carolina Gamecocks cornhole logos

The South Carolina Gamecocks are known for having one of the best tailgate scenes in not just the SEC but the country as a whole. The Cocks also have a pretty wicked logo that looks great as a decal on cornhole boards.

You really shouldn’t have issues finding decals for any major college or university online. Just try to make sure that you’re getting premium quality decals made for the outdoors. You’ll still likely need to put some poly over the decal but going with a higher quality decal will help extend the life of the decal.

6. NFL decals

You shouldn’t have issues finding NFL cornhole decals for any of the major teams, especially those located in regions of the US where cornhole is big like in Pittsburgh. Check out these mis-matching cornhole Steelers logos in black and yellow.

Another popular type of NFL decal would be going with the football helmets of your team of choice.

7. MLB decals

Baseball and softball players make some of the best cornhole pitchers, so I think out of all of the major pro sports, they’ve got the strongest connection.

So it makes sense that a lot of MLB fans would be interested in cornhole. You should be able to find MLB decals for a lot of the major teams and you can add a nice touch to those decals by going with baseball bean bags.

The Boston Red Sox are about as storied as it gets in sports so you can’t go wrong with the some Red Sox decals (unless you’re a Yankees fan).

For the Sox, I think it’s all about going classic with the logo.

8. All the above

Are you a super fan of your city or state?

Some people like to put on decals for all of their favorite local teams even if that means a hand full of decals on one board. I’m personally not a huge fan of this look but if you really want to represent for your teams then more power to you.

9. Superhero decals

Do you fancy a super hero?

How about getting a superhero decal for your favorite duo and putting those on the boards. Maybe you can get a Marvel vs DC thing going on.

10. Custom initials

You can always go with a custom decal with your initials on it.

This is a cool idea for newly married couples or for people who plan on keeping their cornhole boards at home, since the initials have a close “home” connection.

11. Your state

As a Texan, I have an urge to put Texas-shaped decals on just about everything but cornhole boards are perfect objects for state stickers. Rep your state with a state-shaped decal or just go with the state flag (or one on each board).

You can always choose to go with a United Stated decal but you might find that it’s much easier to find cornhole wraps with the US flag.

Final word

If you consider the tips in the article, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding cornhole decals that fit your interest. Always take your time when applying your decals and you should be pretty happy with the final product.
